Joseph Harold Smith
Joseph Harold Smith of Okeene, OK passed from this life into his Heavenly home on October 5, 2016 at Arbor House in Mustang, OK. He was born November 17, 1926 at Laverne, OK in the Railroad Section House to Joseph Hiram and Inez White Smith. He grew up on the family farm 3 miles west of town. He attended Laverne Schools and later at Enid Business College. On January 23, 1945 he married Alpha Mae Brisendine at Buffalo OK. In March 1945, he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Phillipines and Austria and was Honorably Discharged in January 1951. In 1947, after his first Army discharge he attended Pilot School at Buffalo where he received his Pilots License. He worked at Ray’s Grocery Store and was a Masons Helper/Carpenter in Laverne, where they were members of the Olivet Baptist Church. In 1949 he moved his family to Enid and he worked a various jobs. During 1953 they made their last move to Okeene, where he was a meat marketer for Leutkemeyers Grocery. He started working as a clerk in the Okeene Post Office in 1956 and was the Training Postmaster for all new clerk/postmaster employees statewide. He remained there until he retired in the 1988-89. In 1958 he and Mae divorced. He married Evelyn Martin of Enid in December of 1960. He attended Zion Baptist Church for many years and was a very devoted Deacon and teacher. He was a member of the VFW, Masons, Eastern Star, American Legion, Gideon International and Municipal Judge of Okeene. In June of 2003 Evelyn preceeded him in death. He then joined the “mornin coffee guys” at C-Stop and West Acres. He was an avid gardener and gave away as much okra and tomatoes as he could. He was a very talented woodworker and carpenter. His children, many nieces, nephews and friends have his wooden tulips, squirrel shelf pullers, teddy bear benches, birds and shelves. The granddaughters were reciepients of beautiful cedar chests, mini tables and chairs as well as other miscelleanous gadgets such as the clothespin penny pincher. He was readily available to remodel, rebuild and remake any project we asked him to help with and he taught us so much with those projects. In December of 2004 he and Mae Smith Grothe were remarried and enjoyed some traveling and visiting the kids and grandkids. In the past few years, we noticed he was having memory problems and was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease. He lost 2 brothers to this disease. He will be dearly missed by his survivors, his wife Mae of the home, his children: Connie Ratzlaff of Cimarron, KS; Marilyn & Pete Reich of Perryville, MD; Vonda & Barney Barnwell of Ponca City, OK; Randy & Becky Smith of OKC, OK; Nancy Benham of Yukon, OK; Brenda Dull of Yukon, OK; Billy & Shawn Smith of LaFollette, TN; stepchildren Steve Martin and Pat Martin and a daughter in-law Linda Githens, brothers Terry & Reta Smith; Jim & Deann Smith; sisters Nell Morgan, Juanita Griswold, Karen & Herschel Huckabay, sister-in-law Mary Smith and brother-in-law Dee & Frances Brisendine, 15 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren, six great great grandchildren and one on the way, seven stepgranchildren, 18 step-great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; borthers, John and Wayne; sisters, Patricia and Shirley; Step-son Gary Githens, grandson Brad Ratzlaff, grandson Cody Ratzlaff and son-in laws Ernie Ratzlaff and Lonnie Dull. He was a loving Husband, Daddy, Dad, grandpa, Papap Great and Papa Great Great. Blessed are you to be with your loved ones in heaven and to rest in God’s arms. We love you! Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimers Association.
