1927 ~ 2018

Folsom, our beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2018 in Norman, Oklahoma at age 91. On September 24, 1927, this bright, spirited child was born to Joe and Lillie {Addis} Naylor in Okeene, Oklahoma. She was raised in a closely knit family with her older sister, Wanda Lou and a much younger brother, Bruce Addis. Mary graduated from Okeene High School in 1945 before attending Oklahoma Baptist University as an undergraduate, and later the University of Oklahoma for graduate school. Although only 5’ 2” in height, she was a member of the OBU women’s basketball team. After graduate school she was employed as a social worker in downtown Oklahoma City. In 1952, she married a fellow OBU student, Roger S. Folsom. Together, in Watonga, Oklahoma, they raised three rambunctious children, Marcie, Janet and Kelly. She was an energetic and dedicated mother, daughter and homemaker. The family was active in a variety of community business affairs, and attended the First Baptist Church. Mary was also a member of P.E.O. After her marriage ended and over the course of more than 20 years, she had an enduring relationship with her dear friend and travel companion, Dr. S. M. “Max” Barrett. She and Max shared many happy years, including regular attendance at OU basketball and football games. Mom was an amazing cook and kept an impeccable home. Her love for basketball lasted throughout her life. She was also a huge OKC Thunder basketball fan, watching almost every game on TV. In 1994 she moved to Norman, Oklahoma, to be near her brother, our Uncle Bruce. She was always happy with that decision and grateful to be near him and his caring wife, Marilyn. Their patience and loving attention allowed Mom to remain independent and happy throughout most of her long battle with progressive dementia. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Wanda Biddy of Ada. She is survived by her children, her grandchildren, Matheau, Brittni and John Folsom, by her son-in-law, Kent Matcke and by her brother, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews. Our family is sincerely thankful for years of care by Dr. Tom Merrill and his nurse, Pam Levy and for the kindness, patience, love and friendship given to Mom by her caregivers during the last few years of her life, particularly Marta Noguera, Gina Juarez and later on by Rosa Silva. We would also like to thank Joyce Silvernail for all of her support and organizing skills. We will miss you, Mom. The family will host a memorial service in Mary’s honor at a later date. Donations can be made in Mary Folsom’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, at 6601 Broadway Extension, #120, OKC, OK 73116
