Lady Whippets putting in the work as Summer Pride is getting a great turnout
The Lady Whippets returned the school facilities two weeks, as school districts all across the state are allowing the coaches to put together workout programs to get their athletes in shape. For all female athletes of all ages at Okeene, they have been working out from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. from Monday to Thursday.
Coach Patrick Penner has been running the girls’ workouts, and thus far, he’s been easing the Lady Whippets back into the swing of things. For most of the athletes, this is the first physical training they have done since having all spring sports cancelled back in mid-March. Because of that, the Lady Whippets have been focusing less on weights and more on the conditioning.
“You can tell the ones that were running on their own and the ones that weren’t,” explained Penner. “The first week was really rough on some of them. That was just using doing body-weight squats and lunges, and some of them were saying they couldn’t even walk after. I’m glad we stayed away from the weights to start, and chose to build them up slowly because some of them definitely needed that approach.”
