Giving from the Heart
Okeene Elementary School:
During the Christmas season there is so much excitement and anticipation. In my classes with the elementary students we talk a lot about service to others and how important it is to give from the heart, whether it is material things or kind words or thoughts. This year our 1st -6th grades participated in various service projects to reach out to others.
The 1st-3rd grade students donated money to buy presents for the Ronald McDonald House Christmas Store. The Christmas Store is for guest families. It allows parents to be “Santa” by picking out toys in the Store for all of their children. During a time when most of their energy and emotions are centered on their sick child, it is such a blessing that they can be able to give Christmas to all of their children whose lives are also turned upside down. The students donated $182 for such a wonderful cause. They also made Christmas cards and Christmas coloring pages for the children and their parents.
The 4th grade has always done something for our Veterans or active military. This year we chose the Veteran’s Hospital in Clinton. The children donated $94.50 to purchase assorted candies for the Veterans. We got both sugar free and regular candies. The students also wrote letters and Christmas cards to them. We want our Veterans to know that we appreciate their service to our country and we will not forget the sacrifices they made to protect the wonderful freedoms that we enjoy every day.
