Okeene Awarded Over $500,000 for New Sidewalks
Okeene was recently awarded over $500,000 in grants for new sidewalks that will provide safer paths for children walking to and from school. These sidewalks will be constructed from West Acres to Okeene Elementary.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation reportedly chose Okeene along with 20 other communities to receive $35 million which is being provided to smaller communities within Oklahoma with populations of less than 5,000 residents.
The first grant, from Transportation Alternatives Program, is in the amount of $438,179.03. This grant will help with a project building sidewalks on Broadway that is estimated to cost $554,000.
The second grant, from the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust, in the amount of $22,000, will cover the local match needed for the town to receive the TAP funds. The work of a small group of volunteers within the community which promoted healthy lifestyle choices and local walking paths reportedly led to the TSET grants.
