TEACHERS, SUPPORTERS ACROSS THE STATE PROTEST AT THE CAPITOL
Teachers across the state of Oklahoma participated in a walkout on Monday that is sparking national attention for the neglect of the state legislature. With similar demonstrations taking place in Kentucky, thousands of teachers, students and supporters rallied in the capitol to protest issues such as educators going more than a decade without a raise, as well as a lack of funding that has seen facilities and materials drop to embarrassing standards while the number of students in each classroom continues to rise.
Among those attending the rally were National Education Association President Lily Esklesen Garcia and Oklahoma Education Association President Alicia Priest. The work-stoppages in Oklahoma and Kentucky were the second phase of rebellion by educators this year, after West Virginia teachers ended a nine-day strike nearly a month ago.
