Tiger track standouts compete at state meet
The Canton Tigers traveled to Western Heights High School last weekend for the OSSAA State Track and Field Championship. A year ago, four Lady Tigers made the trip to the State Meet, but in 2019, it was the team of senior Deonte Murray, juniors Josh Edwards and Claysen Scott, and sophomore Weston Waldrep.
The four qualified in the 800-meter relay after finishing fifth last week at the Regional Meet with a season- best time of 1:38.22. After being rained out on the first day, all races were run on Saturday as timed finals, as opposed to having preliminaries and finals. That meant Canton had one chance to put together their best effort in order to make the medal stand. The Tigers placed sixth in their own heat with a time 1:40.56, but finished 14th overall in the competition. Still, it was an impressive accomplishment for the team to qualify for the State Meet, and with three of four members returning next year, a return trip could be in the cards. Edwards and Waldrep competed on multiple relay teams through the season, as did Scott who also came within .4 seconds of qualifying for the State Meet in the 200-meter dash.
