Whippets switch to 8-man football for 2019 season
Last week, the Okeene football program got some big news about their 2019 season. After the school board voted early in the week to apply with the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association to play next fall at the 8-man level, the OSSAA approved their request on Thursday.
For the second-straight season, Okeene was expecting to have low-participation numbers on the high school football team, prompting the move. Last Spring, the Whippets entered the summer with less that 20 players committed to playing football in the fall.
Because of that, Okeene opted to co-op with Aline-Cleo to gain extra players putting them at 23 on the roster. Still, with seven seniors graduating from this past fall’s roster, and the count heading into spring football looking to be around 15 players excluding freshmen, the decision was necessary to make the switch.
