Gutierrez and Hood compete at Regional Powerlifting Meet

A pair of Okeene Whippets competed in the Small-School Regional Powerlifting Meet last Friday at Bridge Creek High School, with an opportunity to qualify for the State Meet this weekend. While neither Erik Gutierrez or Johnathan Hood were able to secure their spot in the final meet of the year, the two put up impressive individual performances.

Gutierrez narrowly missed qualifying for the State Meet after he was unable to post a successful squat Still, he tied for the third-best bench press in the 198-pound class at 270 pounds, earning Okeene’s only three points in the team standings.

The senior also tied for fifth with his 445-pound deadlift, giving him a total of 715 in the meet. Gutierrez needed to clear 1025 pounds to automatically earn a spot in the State Competition.
