Sixth-grade boys win Canton Lions Club Basketball Tournament
On February 17 and 18, the Okeene fifth and sixth-grade basketball teams wrapped up their season with a tournament hosted by the Canton Lions Club in Canton. Four schools participated, including the host-Tigers, Alva Goldbugs and Fairview Yellowjackets, in a four-bracket event that separated the fifth and sixth graders.
While each of the Whippets played two games at the event, the sixth-grade boys were able to win their bracket after defeating both Alva and Fairview. Also, Okeene had a trio of shooters place second in the free-throw contest as Julia Penner sank 14 of her 20 shots in the sixth-grade girls’ competition and Tugg Schmidt came up one free throw shy of the sixthgrade boys’ winner with his total of 11.
Blayne Jinkens made seven of his 20 to tie for second among the fifth-grade boys, and Maddie Brickman sank six of her 20 to come in third for the fifth-grade girls.
As for the action itself, the sixth grade boys’ run to the title started with a Monday-night victory over Alva by a score of 27-20. That paired them against Fairview in the Championship Game, where they won 20-11.
