Top Five Sports Moments for 2019-2020 Okeene School Year: Mackie’s Big Game

In the final installment of the top sports moments in Okeene this past year, we revisit the second week of baseball season, just prior to the season being shut down. The junior high and high school baseball teams were hosting a doubleheader against Cherokee.

For most of Okeene’s baseball players, it was just another day spent waiting for school to end until they could get to the field with their friends to take on the Chiefs. However, for seventh-grader Hunter Mackie, he was with the rest of his family attending his grandfather, Donny Spangler’s funeral.

It was a tough day for Mackie and his family, but that night would produce a heart-warming moment that those in attendance will never forget. After striking out and walking in his first two atbats, Mackie came up for his third plate-appearance in the fourth inning with the Whippets up 6-2.
