Whippets compete in regional track meet in Cherokee
The Okeene High School track teams traveled to Cherokee last Saturday, to compete in the OSSAA Regional Championships, with a trip to state on the line. While the girls finished 13th at the event with 10.33 points, the boys took 10th with a total of 27 points.
For the girls, Rachel Wilson was part of a three-way tie for fourth place in the high jump with her height of four feet, four inches. Wilson also took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 2 ¾ inches.
That effort by Wilson in the long jump is now tied for the 10th-best performance in Class A this year. She also finished seventh overall in the 400-meter dash, just one spot shy of earning points.
Meanwhile, Maleah Mayfield placed third in the pole vault, tying her top mark of the season of eight feet.
For the boys, Jess Gambill and Kyle Benham both earned points in the pole vault. Gambill took fourth with his height of 11 feet, six inches, while Benham placed sixth at nine feet. For Gambill, it’s a season-best achievement, and now ties for the sixth-best mark of the year in Class A.
