Whippets host season-opening hoops tourney; Girls finish fourth, Boys take third
Last week, the Okeene Whippets opened up basketball season by hosting their grade school tournament in which they split up their fifth and sixth graders into separate squads in the eightteam tournaments. Okeene hosted Canton, Alva, Fairview, Drummond, Hennessey and Watonga throughout the week as the Okeene sixthgrade girls finished fourth and the sixth-grade boys won the Consolation Trophy.
Unfortunately, Okeene’s fifth-grade girls were able to win a game or score, but the sixth-grade Lady Whippets won the first of their three contests. The sixth-grade girls opened their tournament up with a game against the Hennessey Lady Eagles on Tuesday, and while Okeene only held a two-point lead at the half, that two points would go on to be the difference as they won 15-13.
Ava McCollum and Keri McBride each scored a teamhigh four points in the game, while Joseline Arroyo, Valeria Martinez and Kynadie Lorenz each added a basket. Julia Penner also hit a free throw in the first half to round out the scoring for the Lady Whippets.
